Ms. Ceely has had her much awaited litter – with 5 pups, 4 males and 1 female born on January 26^th – Australia Day for our friends in the southern hemisphere.  In honour of that day all the pups in the Ceely litter will enjoy registered names associated with things or places in Australia.  The names will be selected from submissions made to us by fellow whippet fanciers in Australia who have taken up the challenge to name the pups.

Seen in this photo are five very balanced pups – the lone female is the darkest brindle pup in the group – who weighed between 13.5 and 14.5 ounces each in their first visit to the vet 2 days after their birth. 

Dam of the litter is our stunning Ms. Ceely -- Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely (Eng.Aust.NZ.Ch. Nevedith Rare Rogue x Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jenie), and sire is Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Edradour (Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer x Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Barbados).

  News from the whelping box

We are pleased to present the three latest Avalonia whippets, born after midnight on January 1, 2008!  Dam of these three very pretty female whippets is Cdn.Ch. Avalolnia Lagavulin (Buffy).  Sired by Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer, a black brindle dog with white points, out of Cdn.Ch. Sporting Fields Perfection, a mostly white female with just a couple of fawn brindle patches, Buffy seems to have replicated her parents in this litter via two of the three pups.

Sire of the litter is Cdn.Ch. Frontrunner’s Full Monty, our Danish import sired by Dk.Swed.Ch. Nevedith Veefa Vagabond x Int.Germ.Dk. and two time World Ch. Honey Honey du Tadjoura.  The fawn brindle girl clearly takes her colouring from this side of her family tree.    At this time we are planning to keep the mahogany brindle girl, who most resembles Mom and Dad in colouring.

We can now also confirm that Ms. Ceely is in whelp and due in approximately two weeks, during the last week of January.  Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely (Eng.Aust.NZ.Ch. Nevedith Rare Rogue x Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jenie)  is bearing the first litter of Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Edradour (Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer x Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Barbados), a young male we anticipate will figure hugely in future Avalonia litters.  Ceely has had two large litters for Avalonia – the first, of eight pups, on 31 October 2004, and the second with 10 pups on 31 March 2006.  A look at Ceely suggests another good sized litter will make its debut shortly.

This litter is notable for the pedigree it offers us, and others interested in some of the best bloodlines ever to come out of England and the United States of America.

The five generation pedigree of this litter contains four of the five of the world famous Nevedith double J litter – Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta, twice, Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jenie, once, Nevedith Justa Joy, twice and Nevedith Justa Joker, once.  Parents of the double J litter were Crufts BIS Eng.Ch. Pencloe Dutch Gold, and the top winning whippet of all time in England, Eng.Ch. Nutshell of Nevedith, herself RBIS at Crufts in an entry of 20,000 plus dogs two years before Dutch Gold made it to the top.

The North American portion of the pedigree – reaches into our outcross line to feature some of America’s top whippets in the same five generation pedigree are some of America’s top whippets  -- Am.Ch. Starline Reign On, Am.Ch. Sporting Fields Kinsman whom we have carried as part of our outcross line from the beginning of our breeding program, and Am.Ch. Bohem Of Thee I Sing.

Two new  litters at Avalonia

  In our last update we announced plans for two new litters in early 2006.  Both litters have now been born and the difference between them demonstrates the unpredictability of what you will get any time you breed.

Our first litter – a single male puppy sired by our Danish import Monty -- Cdn.Ch. Frontrunner’s Full Monty, out of Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Billie Holiday was born on March 6^th. We have only ever had one singleton litter before, but there is no denying that good things do come in small packages.  Avalonia Singular Sensation, or Jack as he will be called, is a classic blue fawn brindle dog with white points, colouring we are particularly partial to.  Shown here resisting table stacking on his first outing out in our spring weather, Jack has proven to be an adaptable, sociable, clever pup, who we are sure will delight his new owners, Caroline and Richard, and his fellow whippet housemate, Willie, when he moves to his new home in mid-May.

  Our second litter took us to the other extreme in terms of puppies – 10 puppies.  In over two decades we have only twice had litters of 8 puppies, and considered these huge when contrasted with the more “normal” 4 to 6 pups we routinely expect, but the March 31^st litter sired by Erik -- Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia out of our fabulous Ceely – Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely, breaks all records for us.  Ceely, who was the mother of one of the two 8 pup litters two years ago, has proven to be an exceptional Mom taking care of this large litter, all of whom have grown on in very parallel size. There are 4 females and 6 males in this colourful litter who offer a range of coat colours from fawn and white to black brindle and white, pleasing to almost anyone and shown here in sleeping mode on 17 April. Their lovely dark eyes are now open, the pups are moving around and beginning to play with each other and so our next update will include photos of some of this lovely litter as they mature.

We expect to have two litters of whippets at Avalonia this spring if all goes according to plan. These pups will be ready to move to new homes throughout May, a wonderful time to be a pup in Canada , as we welcome reliably warm spring weather.

We hope to have puppies from a litter sired by our Danish import Monty -- Cdn.Ch. Frontrunner’s Full Monty (Dk.Swed.Ch. Nevedith Veefa Vagabond x Int.Fr.Ger.Dk.and World Ch. Honey Honey du Tadjoura) -- who was bred to Billie --  Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Billie Holiday (Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin) at the end of the first week of March 2006.  This breeding is a repeat of a litter of five pups that was born in August 2003.  We are hoping for pups of similar quality and personality this time around. 

We have also again used our wonderful red brindle and white dog Erik -- Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia (Cdn.Fin.Nor.World Ch. Avalonia Wheatfield Waving x Int.Fin.Swed.Dk.Ch. Scheik’s Royal Choice) for a new litter expected at the very end of March.  Dam of this litter is Ceely – Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely (Eng.Aust.NZ Ch. Nevedith Rare Rogue x Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jenie).  Check out updated photos of Erik on his webpage!

A new litter at Avalonia

Pictured here, the poster child for canine maternal bliss, is Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Barbados (Fox) with her litter of 7 pups sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta ( Nev ) who were born on September 9th.  There are 5 males and 2 females in this photo showing the pups at 3 weeks of age.  All of these puppies are promised to wonderful new homes in Canada and the United States .

A possible November litter at Avalonia

It is a bit too early to tell yet, but we may have another litter at Avalonia this year as we have bred Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wispa Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa) (Edith) to Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia (Cdn.Fin.Nor.World Ch. Avalonia Wheatfield Waving x Fin.Swed.Nor.Ch. Scheik’s Royal Choice) (Erik) bred by Jarmo Vuorinen in Finland .  We are ourselves looking for a show candidate from this litter which features these two astonishingly wonderful dogs.  Stay tuned for – we hope – developments!

Pictured here is Buffy, Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin (Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer x Ch. Sporting Field Perfection), checking over her 12 hour old litter of 7 pups sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa). This is a repeat breeding of the litter that produced our Jazz greats litter including Cdn.Chs. Avalonia Billie Holiday and Avalonia Duke Ellington, and these pups will also be named after Jazz greats. The beautifully marked litter of 4 females, and 3 males were born the evening of August 25th 2004. Five of the litter are black or mahogany brindle and white, while two, a dog and a female, are mostly white with fawn brindle patches. The near black male is almost certainly staying with Avalonia but some of his littermates may still be available!

NEWS NEWS NEWS (17 August 2004)

July 29th saw the birth of a small, two puppy litter at Avalonia.

Sired by Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer out of Ch. Avalonia Barbados, the two male puppies shown in this first photo show early potential. Since we planned this to be Lancer's last litter - he is now 10 - we are keeping one of the males who we hope will become our stud dog of excellence for the next decade, and the other is available for adoption.

The five puppies from our May litter have all found terrific homes with two staying here in Ottawa and the others moving further afield - to Vancouver, Edmonton and Discovery Bay, California. Pictured here are the last two to leave - Mr. P (Avalonia Positano), sister Tori (Avalonia Capri) and their mother Chess (Frontrunner's Guys 'n Dolls, our Danish princess).

There will be a final litter at Avalonia this year, due at the end of August. Sire of this litter is Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta and dam is Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin. This is a repeat of our Jazz greats litter that has produced two Canadian champions in the show ring this year, Cdn.Chs. Avalonia Duke Ellington and Avalonia Billie Holiday.

Update - Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely

We have several individuals patiently waiting for puppies from Nevedith Ceefa Ceely. We believe we missed the opportunity for Ceely pups in 2004 because Ceely had a silent season which we did not detect.

Sometimes, in hindsight, these things seem to happen for a reason, and in this case, we think we have found it.

While our original plan was to breed Ceely to Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer for what we planned would be his last litter, the arrival back at Avalonia for a brief visit of one of our homebreds has given us ample cause for reflection and we have changed our minds. One look at this picture shows why.

Pictured here is the grown up version of a dog featured on our Much Loved Pets page in the past. This is Avalonia Iceman, better known as Jake. Jake was sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa ) out of Ch. Sporting Fields Perfection (Am.Cdn.Ch. Sporting Field Kinsman x Gatsby's Gypsy of Sporting Field). Both his littermates are in Finland and we had not seen Jake since he left with his owners, Bob and Elaine Covey, as a young puppy. When he returned last week to be boarded while they took a family trip to the east coast, he took our breath away.

We have gone over Jake with a fine tooth comb. He is utterly sound and fantastic on the move, flawless coming and going, with wonderful reach and drive. And his qualities extend to his sweet, affectionate temperament. The Covey's have offered us the opportunity to use Jake, and we have made the decision to breed him to our very best, our English champion, Ceely. Stay tuned for when this happens because it should be magic!

    Edie's Girls at 10 Days

We can now confirm that Avalonia will have two litters this year, both due the last week of August. In addition, two of our dogs have been used at stud, and litters are due at Clearhound whippets, here in Ontario, and at Kingscourt Whippets and Irish Wolfhounds in Indiana, USA. Details follow:

Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wispa Jesta (Edie), pictured above, is in whelp to Nevedith Ayfa Aylestorm. This is a first litter for Edie who is 100% Nevedith breeding. Her dam Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa, is a daughter of Eng.Aust.NZ Ch. Nevedith Rare Rogue. She was purchased in England, then kept there until she could be bred to Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta, our favourite Nevedith sire of the past decade (though Rogue is a close second). Edie is a quintessential Jesta daughter, a spectacular bitch out of a sire known for the spectacular soundness and quality of his bitches. This is the first litter for the sire as well. Nevedith Ayfa Aylestorm is a 19.75 inch (50 cm) red brindle and white particoloured dog whom we imported from Nevedith a year ago. Not yet shown he will make his show debut this fall here in Canada and we expect him to finish rapidly. Storm was sired by Eng.Germ.Ch. Whipcat Fire Island at Courthill, who is an interesting mix of English/Canadian and German lines. Storm’s dam is Eng.Ch. Nuts in May of Nevedith, a gorgeous daughter of Rare Rogue.

Our second litter features Windsong Justa Starr, pictured above clearly in whelp and not particularly enjoying the 30+C weather we have been experiencing over the past couple of weeks. Starr is a petite bitch, 18.5 inches tall (47 cms); sired by the late Nevedith Justa Joker (Eng.Ch. Pencloe Dutch Gold x Eng.Ch. Nutshell of Nevedith) out of Eclipse Keeper of the Stars, a daughter, and granddaughter, of our favourite Sporting Fields stud dog of the past decade, Am.Cdn.Ch. Sporting Fields Kinsman (his father was our previous favourite). Starr is in whelp to Cdn. Ch. Frontrunner’s Full Monty, a Danish bred fawn brindle and white dog who also falls within all the dog standards we like to meet as he too is 19.75 inches, 50 cms. Monty’s sire is Dk.Swed.Ch. Nevedith Veefa Vagabond (a Rare Rogue son), and his dam is Int. and Multi Ch. as well as two times World Ch. Honey Honey du Tadjoura, bred in France out of another Nevedith dog, Germ.Ch. Nevedith Dawn Dazzler.

We expect sound, typey whippets falling fully within the height standards for whippets in England, and FCI countries, as well as course of Canada and the USA from these two litters. Feel free to e-mail us if either of these litters interest you.

Also due, in the first week of September are litters from two Avalonia sires.

Lynn and Shannon Cleary of Clearhounds whippets brought their gorgeous bitch Cdn.Ch.Clearhounds Inka, who is as well a Canadian and American Field Champion, as well as an oval track racing champion, to Avalonia for what will be their first ever litter bred out of a brindle sire. Sire in this case is our much loved Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer, a black brindle dog with white points, sired by Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta.

And Patti Grove of Kingscourt whippets in Indiana, USA, brought Pardee Bo Peep at Nevedith, her gorgeous mahogany brindle bitch with white points (sired by Eng.Slov.Ch. Pardee Appy Arry at Nevedith out of Pardee Parisienne Girl) to Avalonia Wotta Jesta, again sired by Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta.
