NEWS NEWS NEWS (28 November 2006)

Avalonia’s September 2006 litter grows up and moves on

It is now 9 weeks since the birth of our ‘stars of the Burlesque era’ litter of 7 pups – 6 girls, 1 boy – sired by English import, and Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Hfa Hanky Panky out of our homebred Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin.  All but two – a Buffy look-a-like whom we will register as Avalonia Gypsy Rose Lee and who is leaving for her new home on December 2nd -- and the mostly white girl we are keeping for ourselves (Avalonia Chesty Morgan), have moved to wonderful new permanent homes.  Photos of the new owners and their pups are featured below.

A new boy at Avalonia

Joining Avalonia this month, in partnership with Jalynn Almond of DuMond Whippets, in Maryland, USA, is a new male whom we hope to use as the outcross in our tightly linebred litters based on Nevedith bloodlines from England.

Ammardan Dumond Avalonia (L)
with Avalonia Gypsy Rose Lee (Front)
and Avalonia Chesty Morgan (Rear)

Ammardan DuMond Avalonia (call name Andy) was bred in Ohio, out of two linebred Sporting Field whippets.   We have used Sporting Field as our outcross line with great success for more than a decade and a half here at Avalonia.

Andy’s sire is Am.Ch. Sporting Field AK’s Rockafella, a son of Am.Ch. Wenrick’s Man About Town who is a son of multi BIS winning Am.Cdn.Ch.  Sporting Field Jazz Fest.  Dam of the litter is Sporting Field Ammardan Noir Chien, who brings her black genes to her son from her sire, Am.Ch. Sporting Field AK’s Tally Ho, a son of BIS and Am.Cdn.Ch. Sporting Field Rock On and Am.Ch. Sporting Field Priceless.  Noir Chien’s dam is Am.Ch. Sporting Field Remembrance, a daughter, again, of SF Jazz Fest.

More good news from the show ring

In our last update we reported that Avalonia Glenlochy needed just two points to finish his Cdn.Ch. title.  We are pleased to confirm that Zeus earned that title on his next show outing, at the Belleville Kennel Club show in late October.  He and litter brother Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Edradour are an important component of the Avalonia breeding program for the future.

Bart Scheerens with Giselle - BIS puppy at World Show, Poznan Poland on 10 Nov. 2006

On the world show scene, we were thrilled to see Boxing Helena’s Fie Fy Foe Fum (call name Giselle and pictured here with her happy owner/breeder Bart Scheerens of Boxing Helena’s Kennels in Belgium) go Best Puppy in Show on Friday, November 10 at the World Dog Show in Poznan, Poland.  Giselle bears an amazing resemblance to her grandmother, our homebred Int.Belg.Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Macallan (Tess), who was shown with great success by Bart in Europe for two years and bred to Eng.Ch. Nevedith Eefa Empra to produce Giselle’s sire before she returned to Canada.

This is the second time we have enjoyed the vicarious thrill of seeing a dog carrying Avalonia breeding win at a World Dog Show.  Cdn.Fin.Nor.World Ch. Avalonia Wheatfield Waving, owned and shown by Jarmo Vuorinen of Finland earned his title at the World Show in Helsinki, Finland in 1998.

Future litters

We have had a number of queries about planned litters for 2007.

At this time we are hoping to have what will be a first litter for us, in early spring,  from Int.Belg.Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Macallan (Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer x Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa).

Later in 2007 we hope to breed Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely (Eng.Aust.NZ Ch. Nevedith Rare Rogue x Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jenie) to either Ch. Avalonia Glenlochy (Zeus) or his litter brother Ch. Avalonia Edradour (Apollo).

NEWS NEWS NEWS (22 September 2006)

A new litter at Avalonia

September 20, 2006 Litter

We are delighted to report the birth, on September 20th, of a new litter at Avalonia.  Pictured here in this photo taken at one day of age, are the 6 females and 1 male puppy that make up this new litter.

Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Hfa Hanky Panky on Left

Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Hfa Hanky Panky on Left

The litter was sired by English import, fawn and white Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Hfa Hanky Panky (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Nevedith Xfa Xanthia) pictured here on the left with Cdn.Ch. Spicewind It’s All About me (center) and their daughter, Cdn.Ch. Dumond Ain’t Misbehavin’.  Dam of the litter is Buffy, our homebred Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin (sired by Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer, a son of Jesta out of Cdn.Ch. Sporting Field Perfection).

This litter has proven to be a delightful amalgam of both parents.  Buffy’s dam was almost entirely white and so are a female and male in the litter (we are keeping the female).  The two dark brindle females are very much like their dam and grandsire Lancer (see Buffy’s page for photos) and the three other females are varying degrees of fawn and white like their sire Hank.

Some of these puppies are available to loving whippet homes.

Cdn.Ch. Avalonia All Hallow’s Eve with owner Jalynn Almond

Pictured here is new Cdn.Ch. Avalonia All Hallow’s Eve with her owner, Jalynn Almond.  Eve finished her Cdn.Ch. title the first day of the show series at Cornwall, Ontario in early September and will now be shown selectively.  Eve, who will be 2 on Halloween, was sired by Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta out of Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely

Avalonia Glenlochy (Zeus) and litter brother Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Edradour (Apollo)

Avalonia Glenlochy (Zeus) and litter brother Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Edradour (Apollo)

Also doing well at Cornwall was Avalonia Glenlochy (Zeus) shown here in a photo with his litter brother Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Edradour (Apollo).  We call them our ‘heavenly twins’.   Zeus picked up 8 points and was BOB each day at Cornwall, and now needs just 2 points to complete his Cdn.Ch.  He will be going out again in October in search of those points.  Zeus and Apollo were a litter of just two pups, sired by Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer out of Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Barbados.

Dumond Bohemian Rhapsody (Dee Dee)

Dumond Bohemian Rhapsody (Dee Dee)

Also making her debut at Cornwall at just 6 months of age in the junior bitch class was Dumond Bohemian Rhapsody (Dee Dee), sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta out of Ch. Spicewind It’s All About Me.  Dee Dee picked up her first two Canadian show points and was best puppy in group two days in a row.

Avalonia Tobermory (Willie)

Two-year-old Avalonia Tobermory (Willie), shown here, has discovered the delights of coursing.  Owned, loved and trained by Caroline and Richard Gibbs, this handsome son of Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer x Int.Belg.Cdn.Ch. Boxing Helena’s Xotic Xile sports some of the ribbons he won over two days at a coursing meet in Kars in mid September.  Go Willie, go!

Photos of some of our new up-and-comers

A lot of people ask us… what happened to the pups I saw on your web page when they were just babies?  How did they turn out?

Avalonia Oscar Peterson

Avalonia Oscar Peterson

In our last update we provided a head shot of Avalonia Oscar Peterson (Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin) the just turned 2 year old son of Buffy from her previous litter for Avalonia.   This photo shows all of Oscar as he is today, nicely maturing into his body.  Oscar has five points towards his Cdn.Ch. title.  We will let him finish maturing before showing him again seriously in 2007.

Avalonia Trick or Treat (Tricky)

Avalonia Trick or Treat (Tricky)

Also born in 2004, is our litter brother of Ch. Avalonia All Hallow’s Eve.  Seen here is Avalonia Trick or Treat (Tricky) who will be 2 on October 31st.  Tricky is a very moderate young dog standing just 20 inches at the withers.

Avalonia Across the Universe (Dan)Frankie - Avalonia Moment in the Sun

Avalonia Across the Universe (Dan) on left and Frankie – Avalonia Moment in the Sun

Also shown here are the 10-month-old son and daughter of Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia (Erik), out of Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wispa Jesta (Edie). The handsome red brindle and white dog (height at the withers is 20.5 inches) is Avalonia Across the Universe (Dan), who is pointed in his first Canadian shows.  His brindle and white sister Frankie – Avalonia Moment in the Sun – is a delightfully spirited handful and a bit more rambunctious than her sensible brother.  She will make her show debut in 2007.

Avalonia Reckless RogueGracie – Avalonia High Society

Avalonia Reckless Rogue, left, and sister Avalonia High Society – call name Gracie

Finally, an update on the huge (for us) litter of 10 pups that were born back on March 31st 2006.  Shown here are two of the litter sired by Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia out of Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely. The red and white dog in the grass is Avalonia Reckless Rogue, the male we selected to keep from the litter.  Rogue is a breathtakingly sound and moderate dog, with the sweetest of temperaments, who we expect will finish out about the size of his half brother Tricky.

Standing by our front pond is Rogue’s litter sister Avalonia High Society – call name Gracie – owned by our long time friend Gabi Svoboda who lives in Ottawa.  Gabi hopes to both show and obedience trial Gracie.  We continue to receive wonderful updates on the rest of this litter, who are scattered from Massachusetts, to St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Quebec City, various locations throughout Ontario and in both Calgary and Athabasca, Alberta.

Good news from the show ring

Cdn.Ch. Dumond Aladdin’s Magic

Pictured here is new Cdn.Ch. Dumond Aladdin’s Magic.  Laddie made finishing his Canadian championship title look easy at the Thousand Islands Kennel Club shows last weekend, winning 9 of the 10 points needed for a Canadian title (he already had 5 from previous shows) with three Best of Breeds and a Group Second.

Laddie was bred by A. Jalynn Almond of Westminster, Maryland and we thank her for letting us have this wonderful young dog.  He is a son of new Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Hfa Hanky Panky (who came up to Canada in July to finish his Canadian title) out of Cdn.Ch. Spicewind It’s All About Me.

His pedigree captures the best of Nevedith Kennel’s double J line, with multiple lines back to one of our two favourite whippets ever bred by Nevedith kennels, Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta (his son Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer, owned by us, was our absolute favourite).

Laddie’s paternal grandparents are Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta and Nevedith Xfa Xanthia, who was herself sired by Eng.Ch. Nevedith Utterly Uppacrust at Dunaruna, a son of Jesta x Nevedith Justa Joy, a litter sister of Jesta.

His maternal grandfather was English-born Am.Ch. Klondyke Spin the Shadow, a son of Eng.Ch. Dunaruna Savannah Shadow (who was also a Jesta son) out of Klondyke Mystique, a daughter of Eng.Ch. Hillsdown Sorcerer.  His maternal  grandmother, Am.Cdn.Ch. Frontrunner’s Ruby Malone (Blixen), was bred by Rudi Brandt in Denmark and imported to Canada by us as a yearling.  Blixen is out of distinguished French and Danish lines that have proven to be extremely compatible with our Nevedith bloodlines,

NEWS NEWS NEWS (25 July 2006)

News from the show ring and at home

We have been a bit slow getting into the show season this year, in large part because we were waiting until we grew on and placed the 10 pups in the 31 March litter sired by Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia (Erik) out of Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely before doing anything else.

All the pups except our keeper male have now moved to wonderful new homes spread across the map of Canada from Athabasca, Alberta to St. John’s, Newfoundland, and to Boston in the United States.  We have elected to keep a red and white male whom we are registering as Avalonia Reckless Rogue, call name Rogue.  Photos of Rogue will soon appear on these pages.

Meanwhile, Rogue’s half brother, Avalonia Across the Universe (Dan), sired by Erik out of Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wispa Jesta, in a litter born in November 2005,  made his show debut over the weekend as a junior puppy, picking up his first two points at the Kars Kennel Club when he went Best of Breed.  He is shown here on one his go-rounds with our friend Connie O’Brien who shows him for us.

Kars was also good for our friends Jalynn Almond and Priscilla Duval (Dumond Whippets in Maryland, USA) who came to visit and show.  Their English import male Nevedith Hfa Hanky Panky (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Nevedith Xfa Xanthia) completed his Cdn.Ch. title.  And to make Hank’s trip to Canada complete he was then bred to Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin (Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer x Cdn.Ch. Sporting Fields Perfection) for what we hope will be a late September litter.  Stay tuned.

More good news came from Kars and the Valley Kennel Club show at Lombardy when Avalonia All Hallow’s Eve (Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely)  was BOB Sunday at Kars, and BOB and Group 4th at Lombardy on Monday under Bill Taylor.  Eve, who needs a single point to complete her Cdn.Ch. title is shown here in a photo with her owner, Jalynn.

Also making her show debut on July 24th at Valley in the junior puppy bitch class was Dan’s litter sister Avalonia Blueberry Lemonade (Summer), shown wonderfully by her owner Debra Wright.  Summer provided even more exciting results today (July 25th) when she went Best of Breed and Best Puppy in the Hound Group to the delight of her owner and breeder!  Congratulations Deb!

Other news – a new litter bred

As noted above, we have now bred Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin (Buffy) to Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Hfa Hanky Panky  for what will be her final litter.  Pups will be due around the 22nd of September 2006.

Page updates planned

We have taken a series of current photos of our top male dogs that we plan to use as we make new pages for them to add to the website.  We have had many enquiries about three of our young males in particular:

Avalonia Oscar Peterson (Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin) – call name Oscar

To satisfy the curious, here are photos of these three superb young males coming into the peak of their lives, along with the most current photos of three of our other exceptional males – the sires of Dan and Eve – Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia (Erik) and Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta (Nev) as well as of our favourite blue boy in the world, Avalonia Dom Perignon.

NEWS NEWS NEWS (19 April 2006)

Two new  litters at Avalonia

In our last update we announced plans for two new litters in early 2006.  Both litters have now been born and the difference between them demonstrates the unpredictability of what you will get any time you breed.

Jack at 6 weeks

Our first litter – a single male puppy sired by our Danish import Monty -- Cdn.Ch. Frontrunner’s Full Monty, out of Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Billie Holiday was born on March 6th. We have only ever had one singleton litter before, but there is no denying that good things do come in small packages.  Avalonia Singular Sensation, or Jack as he will be called, is a classic blue fawn brindle dog with white points, colouring we are particularly partial to.  Shown here resisting table stacking on his first outing out in our spring weather, Jack has proven to be an adaptable, sociable, clever pup, who we are sure will delight his new owners, Caroline and Richard, and his fellow whippet housemate, Willie, when he moves to his new home in mid-May.

Our second litter took us to the other extreme in terms of puppies – 10 puppies.  In over two decades we have only twice had litters of 8 puppies, and considered these huge when contrasted with the more “normal” 4 to 6 pups we routinely expect, but the March 31st litter sired by Erik -- Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia out of our fabulous Ceely – Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely, breaks all records for us.  Ceely, who was the mother of one of the two 8 pup litters two years ago, has proven to be an exceptional Mom taking care of this large litter, all of whom have grown on in very parallel size. There are 4 females and 6 males in this colourful litter who offer a range of coat colours from fawn and white to black brindle and white, pleasing to almost anyone and shown here in sleeping mode on 17 April. Their lovely dark eyes are now open, the pups are moving around and beginning to play with each other and so our next update will include photos of some of this lovely litter as they mature.

NEWS NEWS NEWS ( 25 February 2006 )

Planned litters for 2006 at Avalonia

We expect to have two litters of whippets at Avalonia this spring if all goes according to plan. These pups will be ready to move to new homes throughout May, a wonderful time to be a pup in Canada , as we welcome reliably warm spring weather.

We hope to have puppies from a litter sired by our Danish import Monty -- Cdn.Ch. Frontrunner’s Full Monty (Dk.Swed.Ch. Nevedith Veefa Vagabond x Int.Fr.Ger.Dk.and World Ch. Honey Honey du Tadjoura) -- who was bred to Billie --  Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Billie Holiday (Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin) at the end of the first week of March 2006.  This breeding is a repeat of a litter of five pups that was born in August 2003.  We are hoping for pups of similar quality and personality this time around.

We have also again used our wonderful red brindle and white dog Erik -- Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia (Cdn.Fin.Nor.World Ch. Avalonia Wheatfield Waving x Int.Fin.Swed.Dk.Ch. Scheik’s Royal Choice) for a new litter expected at the very end of March.  Dam of this litter is Ceely – Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely (Eng.Aust.NZ Ch. Nevedith Rare Rogue x Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jenie).  Check out updated photos of Erik on his webpage!

An update on some of our Fall 2005 puppies

All of the Avalonia pups in our Fall 2005 litters are now nicely settled into their new, permanent homes and we are clipping a few new photos of some of them.

Avalonia Django Reinhardt

Avalonia Django Reinhardt

Avalonia Django Reinhardt is from our September litter sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Ch. Avalonia Barbados .  Django is owned and loved by Marina and Alex Pavlovic of Ottawa who are hoping to show him.

Sun Moon Stars

Also featured are pups sired by Erik out of Ch. Avalonia Wispa Jesta (Edith) who were born on 16 November. All these pups are named after some of our favourite daylilies hybridized in the last few years by some of the world’s top daylily breeders.   Daylilies are our other passion – a passion that is reflected in the nearly 1000 different cultivars we grow in our home garden, the thousands of hybrid seedlings in our garden, and our three brand new hybrids recently registered with the American Hemerocallis Society.  Pictured here is Mick’s 2006 registration, Sun Moon Stars, which featured very heavily in our daylily breeding program in Summer 2005.

Avalonia Zahadoom (Gunner) is owned by Dan Dodge of Ottawa , and Avalonia Blackberry Candy (Lola), is owned by Jill Nicholson and Jeff Brandman of Toronto .  Both are named after favourite cultivars produced by hybridizer Patrick Stamile.

Two of the Erik/Edith pups, seen here in a too small basket with Mom, remain at Avalonia and will be shown by us in 2006/2007.  The red brindle and white dog with the stunningly gorgeous head is Avalonia Across the Universe – call named Dan.  Dan is named after hybridzer Dan Trimmer whose wonderful cultivar Across the Universe took the daylily world by storm in 2005.  And the blue fawn brindle and white girl is Avalonia Moment in the Sun – Frankie, named after Moment in the Sun, a gorgeous in your face ruffled yellow daylily introduced in 2005 by hybridizer Frank Smith.

Stay tuned for news of these two pups in the months ahead.

NEWS NEWS NEWS ( 25 November 2005 )

New litter at Avalonia

Edie and her litter of six

Edith and her litter of six

We are very pleased to announce the birth of a healthy litter of 6 pups – 3 males, 3 females – on 16 November 2005 , shown in this photo with their Mum at 9 days of age.  Sire of the litter is Erik -- Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia (Cdn.Fin.Nor.World Ch. Avalonia Wheatfield Waving x Int.Fin.Swed.Dk.Ch. Scheik’s Royal Choice).  Dam of the litter is Edith -- Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wispa Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa).

Two of the three males in the litter are red brindle and white dogs with wonderful black facial watermarkings.  The third male promises to be a very handsome fawn and white.  Two of the three females are will be fawn brindle and white.  The third female is a heavy black brindle and white particolour.

Moving on to new homes

We have found wonderful new homes for all of the pups from our summer litter sired by Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta ( Nev ) out of Ch. Avalonia Barbados (Fox).  Seen here in photos are several of the dogs leaving for their new homes – Christian with his new pup Wilson and Anne-Marie with her new pup Kenzo.  The third photo shows Mick, their breeder, relaxing with two more of the litter – Tulip, sitting on the top of the couch, and Django sitting beside him, along with Mick’s keeper pup from the October 31, 2004 litter – Avalonia Ghostly Mostly, daughter of Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely and sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta.

NEWS UPDATE (2 October 2005)

A new litter at Avalonia

Fox and her 3 week old litter

Pictured here, the poster child for canine maternal bliss, is Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Barbados (Fox) with her litter of 7 pups sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta ( Nev ) who were born on September 9th.  There are 5 males and 2 females in this photo showing the pups at 3 weeks of age.  All of these puppies are promised to wonderful new homes in Canada and the United States .

A possible November litter at Avalonia

It is a bit too early to tell yet, but we may have another litter at Avalonia this year as we have bred Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wispa Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa) (Edith) to Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Ardbeg Avalonia (Cdn.Fin.Nor.World Ch. Avalonia Wheatfield Waving x Fin.Swed.Nor.Ch. Scheik’s Royal Choice) (Erik) bred by Jarmo Vuorinen in Finland .  We are ourselves looking for a show candidate from this litter which features these two astonishingly wonderful dogs.  Stay tuned for – we hope – developments!

Where are they now?

Graham Mullis and Phoebe

The two puppy girls from our early 2005 litter now reside in Guelph and Thunder Bay with members (mother/father and son/wife) of the Mullis family.  Pictured here is Phoebe, owned by Gill and Graham Mullis, enjoying the warmth of Dad’s jersey, a very typical way for a good Yorkshireman to keep his young whippet warm.  And for the record, Phoebe’s eyes are chocolate brown: the blue is simply flash reflection!

Show news update

While mother Fox was taking up maternal duties, her son Avalonia Edradour (Apollo), from her 2 puppy first litter, born on 29 July 2004 , and sired by Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer, was being shown once again, at the CanSave shows at Richmond , Ontario in mid-September.  We are delighted to report that  Apollo is now a Canadian champion, adding to his wins at Kars in late July by going BOB twice, along with a Group Third and a Group Fourth, and taking Winners Dog at the CASA Sighthound Specialty show held the same weekend.  And Int.Cdn.Belg. Ch. Avalonia Macallan (also a daughter of Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer) was BOS at the specialty.

Late breaking show news

We are thrilled to learn in news just in from the Ukraine (October 2nd) , that Aphrodite -- Boxing Helena's Dark Secret (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Eefa Empra x Int. Cdn.Belg.Ch. Avalonia Macallan) -- has earned her first championship title at the double CACIB show in Moldavia, winning CAC / CACIB and BOS the first day, and CAC / CACIB , BOB and finally BIG the second day, making her a Moldovan champion. We congratulate her co-owners, Anna and Yuri on their new championship title.

  Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer

                             Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer

It is with extreme sadness and regret that we acknowledge the loss, to a sudden, fast moving lymphoma, of Canadian Champion Nevedith Local Lancer at just eleven and a half years of age.

There is always, in every serious breeder’s program, a dog with such outstanding characteristics that he becomes the stud dog of choice in that breeding program.  This has been the case, for over a decade with Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Nutcracklin of Nevedith) for we at Avalonia.  From our first sight of him, as a promising 4 month old pup at Nevedith, until we were given the generous and wonderful opportunity to own him when he was 11 months old, by Nev Newton, who could clearly have campaigned him to his English championship title had he remained in England (he had by the time we got him already won his first Reserve CC at the Whippet Club of Scotland), we have considered Lancer to be the best son ever produced by Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta, his sire.

Just 19.75 inches tall, and built like a stallion, with the superbly sound movement of his sire as his hallmark, Lancer produced whippets of exquisite quality in every litter we had from him over the past decade.

          Lancer at 8 on 16 August 2002
                          Lancer at 8 on 16 August 2002

Ten of his pups – all carrying the names of superb single malt scotch whiskies, his trademark in their registered names -- have gone on to become champions in Canada and Europe and many more could have been had they been placed in show homes.  Though notable for exquisite, petite bitches such as Cdn. Avalonia Lagavulin, Int.Cdn.Belg.Ch. Avalonia Macallan, and Int.Fin.Swed.Dk.Nor.Ch. Avalonia Glen Scotia, Lancer’s sons are equally remarkable, and we are especially thrilled with his last two sons, Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Edradour (Apollo) and his brother Avalonia Glenlochy (Zeus)  -- who has yet to make his show debut but whom we fully expect to match his brother’s achievements in the show ring, once out.

Much of the Avalonia population enjoys Lancer as sire, grandsire, or great grandsire, and his qualities are evident in them.  Lancer’s half brother, Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta, and his son, Ch. Avalonia Edradour will feature prominently in our breeding program over the next decade, continuing to provide us, we hope, with all the qualities that Lancer offered us in his sadly shortened life.  God rest, our dearest sweet prince!

A new litter at Avalonia

Our much anticipated litter sired by Ch. Frontrunner's Full Monty out of Avalonia Ella Fitzgerald made its debut on July 4th. We are disappointed to report that there were just two puppies, both females and not the five or six we were hoping for! Mom and the pups are doing well, as this photo taken at 3 plus weeks shows.

We have bred a second litter for 2005, this one sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta (Nev) out of Ch. Avalonia Barbados (Fox). Both dogs are pictured on this website. This litter is due around the 12th to 14th of September, so stay tuned.

Fox is the dam of two pups from her first litter, born on 29 July 2004, sired by Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer. The first of her very similar sons to enter the show ring, Avalonia Edradour (Apollo), made his show debut as a senior puppy this month.

Show news update

Avalonia Oscar Peterson, shown in several shows earlier this year with great success, has made way for some shows featuring Avalonia Edradour (Apollo).

Shown at Kars, Ontario, in three shows in mid-July, Apollo was three times Best of Winners, and three times Best Puppy in Hound Group. He sits at 6 points towards his Cdn.Ch. His attributes are clear in this photo showing Apollo with one of his puppy group wins, handled by our friend Connie O'Brien.

Also in the show ring this month for just one show as a junior puppy, was Avalonia All Hallow's Eve, a daughter of Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Eng.& Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely. Eve is owned by Jalynn Almond, of Westminster, Maryland, and her show debut in Canada at the Lombardy Kennel Club show was just to get her paws wet in the Canadian show ring… or so we thought. It was a delight therefore when English judge Frank Kane chose what is obviously an immature, but very promising puppy as his best of breed, based on her strong breed type. Pictured here on that happy occasion, though obviously flagging from the 100 F heat that we enjoyed that day, is Eve with her owner Jalynn.

Jalynn also debuted her homebred bitch Dumond Ain't Misbehavin' (Nevedith Hfa Hanky Panky x Cdn.Ch. Spicewind It's All About Me) during her visit to Canada with excellent results. Beebee left Canada with 8 points towards her championship, which included a Second in Group placement under Argentinian judge Roberto del Puerto, pictured here with Beebee and Jalynn.

Some more sad departures

No matter how hard you try to steel your heart to the inevitable, the loss of much loved dogs, whatever their age, hurts. July saw two of our most senior citizens cross over the Rainbow Bridge.

Runaround Jenny Wren, who died on July 5th at 17 years of age, was our tiny perfect fawn brindle whippet. We purchased her in England at 8 weeks of age from English breeder/judge June Cross, who became a very good friend in the years after we bought The Wren, until her early and untimely death in 1997.

Born in early 1988 Wren was a granddaughter of the great Eng.Ch. and Waterloo Cup Coursing champion, Chyton Copy Press and a half sister to Eng.Ch. Runaround Rosalind. Never shown nor bred, the Wren was the most perfect pet anyone could wish for.

Wren enjoyed good health until three days before she died, alert and active and continuing to explore the garden and hang out with her friends right up to that point.

Last week we unexpectedly lost Glastonbury Victoria Regina (more affectionately known as Mouse), the only daughter out of our litter sired by Eng.Am.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Up Town Guy out of Am.Cdn.Ch. Amazone's Glastonbury Lily, daughter of our first Nevedith dog. Glastonbury was our affix before we settled on Avalonia. Mouse was almost 15 and the last of her litter. In good health to the end, Mouse had a stroke, which took her from us. She was the dam of two litters, and her children and grandchildren are found in Canada and Europe. Her daughter, Avalonia Glastonbury Morning Glory moved to Rudi Brandt's Frontrunners kennel in Denmark and is the dam of several champions there, including Ch. Frontrunner's Velvet Goldmine.

NEWS UPDATE (30 May 2005)

After a dreary, long, cold, winter that began far earlier than normal -- in late October here in Central Canada -- we have endured a spring of prolonged colder and far wetter than normal weather than is typical in this part of Canada where we have usually enjoyed warm, early springs.  We are hoping the few nice days we have been able to enjoy at the end of May  -- albeit every day has at least some rain and the mosquitoes are B52 bomber size – is a harbinger of a better summer for us here at Avalonia.  We see places like London and Belgrade enjoying temperatures in the 30 C range in late May, and hope some of those days of summer eventually come our way as well.

With spring come dog shows and litters and we have news of both to report in this update.

The first show news for 2005

Avalonia Oscar Peterson May 30, 2005

Our first entry into the show rings this spring returned home after a weekend at the Ottawa Kennel Club shows with 6 of the 10 points needed for his Canadian Championship title.  Avalonia Oscar Peterson (Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin), born August 25, 2004, and seen here in this casual photo taken today playing in the yard, is still in the senior puppy classes, but he is showing all of the promise we saw the day he was born.

Named after Canada’s greatest living jazz musician, the legendary Oscar Peterson, Oscar reflects the quality we have come to expect from descendants of the late, great Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta.  Oscar’s father is a Jesta son, and his mother is out of Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer, whom we and others believe is the best son Jesta ever produced.  We expect Oscar to finish his Cdn.Ch. title easily in the coming weeks.

An update on our Nev – Ceely litter

A late October litter would not be our personal choice of a time to whelp and run on a litter of 8 puppies, particularly given the early and difficult winter we experienced here this year, but when your choicest female gives you that option you exercise it.  We did so with Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely, who, as we reported, had a litter of 8 on October 31st 2004, sired by Avalonia Wotta Jesta (Nev).  While all but one of the pups available from that litter have moved on to their new homes in Canada and the USA, we’d like to provide an update on how those on hand at home look today.

Tansy, Tristan and Tricky on May 3, 2005

This photo shows three of the Halloween litter taken in early May at 5 months of age.  Pictured here are – from left to right – bitch puppy Avalonia Ghostly Mostly (Tansy), and dog puppies Avalonia Hocus Pocus (Tristan) and Avalonia Treat or Treat (Tricky).  Tansy and Tricky are staying with Avalonia and will make their show debuts later this year, while Tristan will be moving to Sweden in July 2004 to take up residence with Grethe Ljostad (Nippy’s Kennel).

A new litter for 2005

We expect a new litter of whippet puppies in the first week of July 2005.  Sire of the litter is Cdn.Ch. Frontrunner’s Full Monty, our Danish import bred by Rudi Brandt.  Monty is a son of Dk.Swed.Ch. Nevedith Veefa Vagabond out of Int.Germ.Dk.& two time World Winner Honey Honey du Tadjoura.   Dam of the litter is Avalonia Ella Fitzgerald, a solid mahogany brindle bitch with white points, sired by Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin.  She is litter sister to Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Billie Holiday and a full sister via a repeat breeding to Avalonia Oscar Peterson (above) and his sisters Avalonia Nina Simone and Avalonia Diana Krall who have also been retained by Avalonia.

Visitors to Avalonia know Ella well… she is the bitch everyone considers to have been pick of her litter, though she has never been shown – strictly our fault, not hers.  A picture of Ella at 8-weeks here shows what we saw in her then and continue to see in her now.

Avalonia Ella Fitzgerald at 8 weeks

Updated pictures of Ella, and her litter will be provided in a later update.

NEWS UPDATE ( 7 January 2005 )

It is the depth of winter and the show season hasn’t begun, so there is little news to report at this time, but we cannot help but delight in our latest litter, now turning 9 weeks old.  Sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta out of Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely, these pictures show four of the five male puppies born on 31 October 2004 at their January 6th vet visit for their shots and Canadian Kennel Club tattoos.

Avalonia Harvest Moon  Avalonia Hocus Pocus

Avalonia Jack-o-Lantern  Avalonia Trick or Treat

We quite accidentally missed photographing one of the boys, but he too closely resembles his littermates.  Several of these boys are spoken for, but several others are still available to loving whippet homes.

NEWS NEWS NEWS ( 31 October 2004)

We have had a busy several months, between dog shows, puppies, visitors from Belgium (see the photo of Bart and Maddie with horses of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police), and a two-week trip to England visiting whippet friends and attending the South Yorkshire Whippet Club and Driffield championship shows, all of which makes this update both necessary and timely!

WE HAVE WE HAVE Ceely / NEV PUPPIES!

Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely (Eng.Aust.NZ Ch. Nevedith Rare Rogue x Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jenie) presented us overnight with a lovely litter of 8 puppies – a lovely Halloween present made up of 5 dogs and 3 bitches.  Sire of the litter is Avalonia Wotta Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa, a daughter of Rare Rogue).  Our first close examination of the puppies (pictured here with their Mom) suggests they will live up to the high expectations we had when we decided to tightly linebreed sire and dam.  Check this spot for updated puppy photos.

TWO NEW CHAMPIONS

We also have wonderful news to report from the show ring as two of our dogs have finished their Cdn.Champion titles in the past month.

First to finish at the Ottawa Kennel Club championship show in mid-September was Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ayfa Aylestorm (Eng.Germ.Ch. Whipcat Fire Island at Courthill x Eng.Ch. Nuts in May of Nevedith).  Storm is pictured here at home with our friend Bart Scheerens, visiting from Belgium , just after his title completion.

Storm at Home once again

Second to finish – but sadly Bart had returned home and did not get to see his win in person, was Cdn.Ch. Boxing Helena’s Art Lover of Nevedith (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Boxing Helena’s Yman), bred by Bart Scheerens.  Picasso finished in grand style in mid-October with back to back BOBs shown by our friend Connie O’Brien at Belleville , Ontario . Picasso is shown here after he completed his title.

Both Storm and Picasso will figure prominently in the Avalonia breeding program over the years ahead.

Also pictured is an updated photo of Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Billie Holiday who completed her title earlier in 2004.

RETURNING HOME TO AVALONIA

We are delighted to welcome back Int.Belg.Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Macallan (Tess) from her two-year sojourn in Belgium with Bart Scheerens.  In her two years overseas Tess completed two Ch. titles, including her International Champion title, was top whippet female in Belgium in 2003, and had a litter sired by England ’s Number 1 whippet dog for 2004, Eng.Ch. Nevedith Eefa Empra.  In her last show in Europe , on 21 August 2004 , Tess was BOB and Best in Group at Mechelen , Belgium .  She had begun her European show career at Utrecht , Netherlands , on 27 October 2002 , winning BOB and Best in Group there.  We thank Bart Scheerns from the bottom of our hearts for his commitment to and care of Tess during her time in Europe .  Tess will be bred at Avalonia in 2005.

GROWING ON AT AVALONIA

We have two splendid sons of Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer x Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Barbados whom we are growing on at Avalonia.  Pictured here in this atmosphere picture at 8 weeks are Zeus and Apollo – Avalonia Edradour and Avalonia Glenlochy, who are now 12 weeks of age.  Pages will be added for them shortly.

Zeus and Apollo 2004

TWO DEPARTURES

We have also, sadly, had our share of losses in the past month, with two of our older champion bitches leaving us.  Cdn.Ch. Glastonbury Alabama (Am.Cdn.Ch. Amazone’s Glastonbury Lily x Am.Cdn.Ch. Carbeth Logan of Sporting Field) was just 12 and her passing with a fast moving cancer was unexpected.  Am.Cdn.Ch. Amazone’s Glastonbury Lily (Nevedith Wood Chip x Amazone’s Lucy’s Girl) was 15.  She was our first daughter of a Nevedith whippet, and though we bred several litters before her, we credit her as the foundation bitch for our entire breeding program as her litter out of Eng.Am.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Up Town Guy provided us with the dogs who have taken us right up to the present.  Lily was also our first – and fastest – American champion, finishing her Am.Ch. title in just four shows taking 4-4point wins four days in a row on the Kentuckiana circuit.  Her legacy is seen in virtually every whippet on our property today.

bulletNEWS UPDATE (31 August 2004)

Buffy and her 12-hour old pups, August 26, 2004

Pictured here is Buffy, Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin (Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer x Ch. Sporting Field Perfection), checking over her 12 hour old litter of 7 pups sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa). This is a repeat breeding of the litter that produced our Jazz greats litter including Cdn.Chs. Avalonia Billie Holiday and Avalonia Duke Ellington, and these pups will also be named after Jazz greats. The beautifully marked litter of 4 females, and 3 males were born the evening of August 25th 2004. Five of the litter are black or mahogany brindle and white, while two, a dog and a female, are mostly white with fawn brindle patches. The near black male is almost certainly staying with Avalonia but some of his littermates may still be available!

bulletNEWS FLASH (21 August 2004)

We are thrilled to pieces with the wonderful news we have just had from Belgium. Cdn. & International Ch. Avalonia Macallan (Tess) completed the qualifications for her Belgian Championship in style winning BOB and then going BIG at the show Mechelen, shown by our good friend Bart Scheerens of Boxing Helena kennels and she is now Int.Cdn.&Belg.Ch. Avalonia Macallan. This title completes an eventful year for Tess, who has just returned to the show ring after her first litter, sired by Eng.Ch. Nevedith Eefa Empra, currently number one whippet dog in England. We are deeply grateful to Bart for all he has done for Tess, and for Avalonia in Europe!

NEWS NEWS NEWS (17 August 2004)

New puppies at Avalonia

July 29th saw the birth of a small, two puppy litter at Avalonia.

Lancer and Fox's Pups

Sired by Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer out of Ch. Avalonia Barbados, the two male puppies shown in this first photo show early potential. Since we planned this to be Lancer's last litter - he is now 10 - we are keeping one of the males who we hope will become our stud dog of excellence for the next decade, and the other is available for adoption.

The five puppies from our May litter have all found terrific homes with two staying here in Ottawa and the others moving further afield - to Vancouver, Edmonton and Discovery Bay, California. Pictured here are the last two to leave - Mr. P (Avalonia Positano), sister Tori (Avalonia Capri) and their mother Chess (Frontrunner's Guys 'n Dolls, our Danish princess).

Mr. P, sister Tori and their mother Chess

There will be a final litter at Avalonia this year, due at the end of August. Sire of this litter is Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta and dam is Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin. This is a repeat of our Jazz greats litter that has produced two Canadian champions in the show ring this year, Cdn.Chs. Avalonia Duke Ellington and Avalonia Billie Holiday.

New puppies featuring Avalonia bloodlines at Kingscourt in Indiana, USA

Patti Grove and John Fisher have a litter of 5 males with tight Avalonia connections in Indiana. The boys, born on August 7th, are a mix of dark brindle and white particolours. Sire of the litter is Kingscourt Classic Bentley (all Nevedith connections via his sire, Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta and dam, Pardee Bo Peep at Nevedith) ex Avalonia Beach Bunny (Cdn.Ch.Scheik's Avalonia Whisky, bred in Finland by Jarmo Vuorinen out of Avalonia Toast Ghost who is half Nevedith/half Sporting Fields). These are splendid looking puppies.

Photos of the litter, and a contact e-mail address and phone number for John can be found at:    http://www.geocities.com/ajindiana2003/Whippets.html?1092101914978

Update - Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely

We have several individuals patiently waiting for puppies from Nevedith Ceefa Ceely. We believe we missed the opportunity for Ceely pups in 2004 because Ceely had a silent season which we did not detect.

Sometimes, in hindsight, these things seem to happen for a reason, and in this case, we think we have found it.

While our original plan was to breed Ceely to Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer for what we planned would be his last litter, the arrival back at Avalonia for a brief visit of one of our homebreds has given us ample cause for reflection and we have changed our minds. One look at this picture shows why.

Jake - Avalonia Iceman

Pictured here is the grown up version of a dog featured on our Much Loved Pets page in the past. This is Avalonia Iceman, better known as Jake. Jake was sired by Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa ) out of Ch. Sporting Fields Perfection (Am.Cdn.Ch. Sporting Field Kinsman x Gatsby's Gypsy of Sporting Field). Both his littermates are in Finland and we had not seen Jake since he left with his owners, Bob and Elaine Covey, as a young puppy. When he returned last week to be boarded while they took a family trip to the east coast, he took our breath away.

We have gone over Jake with a fine tooth comb. He is utterly sound and fantastic on the move, flawless coming and going, with wonderful reach and drive. And his qualities extend to his sweet, affectionate temperament. The Covey's have offered us the opportunity to use Jake, and we have made the decision to breed him to our very best, our English champion, Ceely. Stay tuned for when this happens because it should be magic!

NEWS UPDATE   ( 22 June 2004 )

We are pleased to report our newest Canadian champion, Ch. Avalonia Billie Holiday (Ch. Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin).  Billie began the trip to her championship in June 2003 with one series of shows, then took time out for her first litter later in the summer.  She returned to the show ring in May 2004 and completed her Cdn.Ch. title on Friday, June 11th, going BOB and 4th in Group under breeder/judge Max Magder.  She finished the show weekend with two further BOBs, and a Group 3rd.

bulletNEWS   NEWS   NEWS   NEWS   ( 30 May 2004 )

We have puppies!

Five in fact, four males, one female, all fawn/blue fawn brindle and white, born May 21st 2004 .    Sire of the litter is Monty -- Cdn.Ch. Frontrunner’s Full Monty (Dk.Swed.Ch. Nevedith Veefa Vagabond x Multi Ch. Honey Honey du Tadjoura) and dam is Chess – Frontrunner’s Guys n’ Dolls (Dk.Swed.Ch. Nevedith Veefa Vagabond x Dk.Fin.Ch. Frontrunner’s Nice n’ Naughty).

Seen here in this photo taken at 10 days, all these puppies in our Amalfi Coast litter (the four boys -- Avalonia Amalfi, Avalonia Sorrento, Avalonia Ravello, Avalonia Positano, and the female, Avalonia Capri) are already promised to homes ranging from Ottawa to Vancouver, and the US West Coast.

A second Avalonia litter has been bred and is due at the end of July 2004. Sire of this litter is the fabulous Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer, just turned 10 and looking and behaving years younger.  Lancer has consistently produced dogs of excellence, as evidenced by his champion get in Canada , the USA and in Europe .  Dam is our young group winning star, Ch. Avalonia Barbados (Fox).  We expect to see lots of black brindle or black brindle and white particolours in this litter given that Dad is a solid black brindle with white points, and Mom is an attractive particolour out of a very heavy black-brindled,  Irish-marked dam.

For those on our waiting list for pups out of Eng.&Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely, we encourage patience.  We still plan to breed Ceely to Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer, whenever she next comes into season.

New champions

We are delighted to report that Clearhounds Kiera, daughter of Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer out of Ch. Clearhounds Inka, bred by Lynn and Shannon Cleary, and owned and shown by Dr. Kate Darbyshire, completed her Canadian championship in style with a 3-point Best of Winners win at the Hochelaga Kennel Club whippet specialty on the Victoria Day long weekend. This win makes Kiera a dual champion as she is already a Canadian obedience champion.

Hot on the heels of her championship comes that of new Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Duke Ellington (Avalonia Wotta Jesta x Ch. Avalonia Lagavulin) who returned to the show ring at the Ottawa Kennel Club show the last weekend of May after a winter off, with his owner Allayne Jones.  We are delighted to report that Duke (see Duke’s page) went WD and BOS to finish his Cdn.Ch. title owner handled all the way.  We are hoping Duke’s good fortune holds in early June for litter mate Avalonia Billie Holiday, owned by Avalonia, who needs just a single point to finish her Cdn.Ch. title.

Also pictured standing here in a very cold May breeze with her owner Allayne is Avalonia Eclisse Solare CD, CGC (Cdn.Ch. Scheik’s Avalonia Whisky x Glastonbury Victory Salute, a full sister of 5 Avalonia bred champions, including Cdn.Fin.Nor. and World Ch. Avalonia Wheatfield Waving).  As reported in our last news update, Snuggles completed her Canadian companion dog (CD) obedience title, on 14 February 2004, a relatively rare feat for a whippet here in Canada, adding it to her Canine Good Citizen award that she earned a year earlier.  We thank Allayne for her commitment to both Duke and Snuggles.
